The Northern Lights have created a spectacular display across Scotland and the United Kingdom this week.

The Aurora has been visible to the naked eye without the need for photo equipment – which is rare for southern areas. There have been observations as southern as Dorset.

The phenomenon is caused by particles loaded with the sun striking the gases in the earth’s atmosphere.

This appears as brilliant and swirling curtains of the lights in the night sky, in the colors of the green with pink and scarlet.

The best chance to see the Aurora on Wednesday is in the north of Scotland, although the weather conditions are not ideal.

Here are some pictures from across the country this week.
