Australia vs South Africa: Hosts suffer hat-trick of ODI series losses
Australia cricket is in transition. Steve Smith, David Warner and Glenn Maxwell have all retired from ODIs, paving way for a new generation. And while Australia performed admirably in the Champions Trophy, wins in bilateral series have been hard to come by. The series loss against Proteas has been their third straight in ODIs. It is the second straight home series loss. following a defeat to Pakistan earlier in the season.
On Friday, in chase of 277, Australia succumbed to 193 all out. It now marks the fourth consecutive time Australia were bowled out for under 200 in a home ODI. Batting has been a real concern and the world champions will hope to plug that gap in two years time for the 2027 World Cup.
The Men in Yellow have won just a solitary ODI since November 2024, which came against a struggling England side in the Champions Trophy 2025. That was the only instance of the Aussies scoring in excess of 300. Issues in their batting have magnified in the absence of Smith and Maxwell. On Friday, only Josh Inglis and Cameron Green managed to score 20 or more.
