As a big fan since his days “New Girl”, any film or television program that offers a vehicle to Jake Johnson to bend his comedian chops is welcome in my book. The 47 -year -old actor practically raised the type of character from everyone with whom we can link, sympathize and take care effortlessly in a few seconds. The fact that he is naturally hilarious with a great understanding of how discreet and situational comedy works is a bonus. His character in the “minx” of HBO Max was a somewhat increased example of this. Although Doug Renetti of Johnson, a summary scamper and adult editor Entertainment, was not necessarily the center of the 1970 series, without him, it would not have worked as well as. But even with Johnson bringing charm and pleasure like a guy in the street and warned, dressed in an outfit most similar to an imaginable pimp, “Minx” could not find an audience large and faithful to survive for more than two seasons.
The series follows the young feminist writer Joyce Prigger (Ophelia Lovibond) in the 1970s in Los Angeles, while trying to make the earth a Women magazine from Highbrow. Until she meets Doug Renetti (Johnson), that is to say who sees a great opportunity in Joyce and her ideas but knows the industry well enough to realize that they must be presented in a slightly different. Meaning: Naked men with huge dongs and perfect abs to attract more female readers. Thus, the two join forces to create the very first female erotic magazine and become close friends in the process. And we can attend all the challenges, development relationships (romantic and professional), and the successes and failures they are faced with their eccentric team while transforming the magazine into a cultural phenomenon.
Minx faced too many challenges (including Sag-Aftra’s strike) that she could not overcome
Despite the loving critics and praising the two seasons of “Minx”, the program had trouble finding and maintaining a basic audience in 2022 and 2023. The initial cancellation of HBO Max after season 1 (with the shooting of season 2 almost finished), however, it was not linked to a drop in viewer but to “the implementation of the tax reduction tax”. So Starz entered to save the series, picking up its seasons and broadcasting follow -up in the summer of 2023. However, the rescue has not lasted long since “Minx” could not produce the figures (and an audience) large enough to justify a continuation. It did not help that season 2 started to be broadcast just after the kick-off of the Sag-Aftra shot, which makes the stars and the creatives of the show impossible to promote it properly. There, Jake Johnson already suspected that the rather sad fate of the comedy was sealed. Speaking with the deadline, he said:
“I think the move to Starz, I think HBO makes their HBO thing somehow, or HBO Max, no matter what is called now, I think it was brutal for [the show]. Then, I think that the outgoing strike well because we were trying to promote it … I guess you cannot beat something too several times and continue. “”
Unfortunately, he was right. “Minx” was canceled for the second time in early January 2024, and this time there was no other channel or streaming platform to intervene and save the day for the comedy of the period.
