How to minimize distractions in Google Chrome without extension

What is the damage to visit a time website for a few minutes? This is a question that I constantly ask myself. But whether it is due to a notification or a recommendation on the Chrome starter page, I end up losing productivity hours by not controlling myself and opening a dozen additional unnecessary sites. It shouldn’t be you, because there are a few simple things you can do to stay focused while working in Chrome.

Make chrome a little quieter by managing the notifications

If the notifications of certain websites become a nuisance, it is time to jump in chrome settings and modify a few things. You can deactivate all notifications or manage them for individual sites.

To do this, click the three -point icon in the upper right corner and access Settings> Confidentiality and Security> Site settings and click “Notifications” in the Authorizations section.

If you do not want the websites to send you notifications, select “do not allow sites to send notifications” in the default behavior section.

To silence individual websites, head to the personalized behavior section to audit websites that can send you notifications. Access the list of authorized notifications, click the three -point icon next to the website and select “Block” in the menu. This will add it to the list of notifications not authorized to send.

Create a separate profile for targeted work

Once you have finished working, you may want to receive these notifications again if you use chrome with casualness. It can become tedious to expire them again. If you are a lazy person like me, you might not worry about the management of notifications, leaving these distractions in place.

Fortunately, Chrome allows you to configure different profiles – each to maintain their own settings. You can configure a profile to minimize distraction and another for fun and switch to each other if necessary.

To create another profile in Chrome, click on the image icon of your profile in the upper right corner and select “Add a new Chrome profile” in the menu.

If you have another Google account you want to use, whether it is a personal, work or school account, click on the “Connect” button. Otherwise, click on “Continue without account” to create a local account.

From there, simply follow the instructions to configure the desired account. You can then configure this account to be the one you use for work.

Bring your start -up page for productivity

When I open a new tab in Google Chrome, I am greeted by distractioning shortcuts (for example, Facebook and YouTube). It is easy to raise your shoulders with trouble opening one of them for a few minutes, only to realize that you have condemned for hours.

There are a lot of things you can do to prepare the start -up page for productivity. You can start by withdrawing all of these distracting shortcuts. Click the three -point icon in the upper right corner of the shortcut and select “Delete” from the menu.

Focus on content with reading mode

Whether you read for fun or do research, elements such as advertisements, side bars and contextual windows on a web page can be distracting. By allowing the reading mode, you can get a clean and targeted environment that helps you focus only on content.

To activate the reading mode, click the three -point icon in the upper right corner and select more tools> Reading mode.

In the reading mode, you can use the commands in the upper menu to customize your experience. For example, you can change the font and adjust the size of the text, the line of the line and the spacing of the letters for a more comfortable visualization experience. You can also choose a larger font or a darker theme to reduce eye fatigue.

Change the host file to redirect temporal launch websites

Chrome Store has various extensions that can help you block websites in a few clicks. But as you want to avoid them, it would take a little more effort.

One way to do it is to modify the host file on your system so that it redirects the launch websites over time for 127.0.0.1. This is known as the local host and will show the This site cannot be reached Error message each time you enter the URL of the time launch site, blocking it effectively.

THE "refused to connect" Error message in Chrome.

If you are under Windows, you will find the host file at “C: \ Windows \ System32 \ Drivers \ etc \ Hosts”. An easy way to open it is to open the execute Windows dialog box, stick this address in the text box and click on the “OK” button. He will ask you which application will use to open the host file, so choose “Notepad” from the list.

If you cannot change the host file, make sure you have administrative privileges.

To redirect Facebook to the localhost, enter the next line at the bottom of the host file and save it:

        127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
Redirect Facebook to the local host so that it is blocked.

You can add more lines for each website you want to block this way. Just make sure to replace www.facebook.com With this site on each additional line. We also have a guide on how to modify the host file on other systems (for example, Mac and Linux).

Keep in mind that you can also associate these tactics with the tools of your system to limit distractions. For example, you can deactivate notifications or activate the “Do not disturb” mode on Windows. You can also change the notifications on Mac to make it more silent. However, I usually make the adjustments mentioned above in Chrome because I don’t really have much on my computer that can distract me.
