Martin runs only on building murders in the future at the start of season 5

Martin Short was the only one of the three stars of “only murders in the building” to receive an actor’s appointment at the Emmy this year – and he always laughs at the way the Co -Star Steve Martin did the news. “Steve phoned me in the middle of the afternoon,” said shorts VarietyReward circuit podcast. Martin continued to play on the news: “” Hi, it’s Steve. So I went out all day, and I went hiking and cycling and, Oh my God, I was so busy. Hey, did you hear something about Emmys? “”

“Only Murders in the Building” was completely the triumph of Short, which earlier this year won his very first Sag Award, for an exceptional performance of a male actor in a series of comedy. This same night, he and his co-stars also won the Sag Award of Comedy Series together.

“It is a big show, it is well written, it is well directed, it is well designed, and it is a success,” says Short, amazing the success he is experiencing at this stage of his career. “These things are very rare … It is not only great to be nominated for things, but being so satisfied with the result of the show is incredible.”

As an Oliver Putnam, Short is in many ways the emotional nucleus of “only murders”. During four seasons – and soon five – the public saw his character fight to maintain a link with his son, lament on what his career could have been, then get closer to a second chance, then fall in love with Loretta (Meryl Streep).

Season 4 ended with the marriage of Oliver and Loretta – but it is “only murders in the building”, there is, of course, a murder in the building at the very end: the porter of the Arconia Lester (Teddy Coluca). This brings us to season 5, which returns on September 9. So how many murders can take place in the building? In other words, how long could the show continue?

“I think the reality is that you know when you feel like you spent your time,” says Short. “I think everyone is amazed that it has disappeared so long. It’s a long period of streaming to go five years.” The Dick Van Dyke show “ended after five years, because one of the reasons was that they were afraid of losing the quality of this. But then” Friends “became how long and they were always brilliant.”

On the episode of this week of Variety Podcast Circuit Awards, we are talking about “Only Murders in the Building”, of his new concert hosting the last iteration of the game “Match Game”, and we even get a cameo from one of the guests of Short House, Tina Fey. But first, on the round table, we examine some of the news of the week – including the latest Disney negotiations to keep the Oscars – and where things arise while the phase 2 vote starts this Monday. Listen below!

Short says he has fun “only murders in the building”, but he is also deeply proud of “the reputation he has as a workplace in New York. It is a very loose whole, and one of the reasons is that Steve and Selena and I all work in the same way, fuck, laughing. joy of life is what permeates the whole, and I think it also translates a little to the camera. »»

Although it is best known for its comic roles, Short also made waves by taking dramatic pieces in series like “The Morning Show” and “Damages”. “If someone writes you a big role that is dramatic, you don’t say:” No, I only do comedy, “he said. “I do something that seems exciting, intriguing and risky.”

More recently, it meant taking the host of the game show on ABC’s “Match Game” this summer. He says he was attracted to the challenge: “You don’t know what you are doing, but you know it’s always intriguing to try something new, and you know you could potentially fail,” he said. “It’s a bit exciting at this stage. Maybe not when I was 25.”

Has there ever been an idea of a short organization of the series as a character as his character as a Hollywood entertainment journalist too excited but often ill-informed, Jiminy Glick? After all, “Match Game” concerns sassy interactions with a panel of celebrities, and Glick is known for its irreverent interactions with the stars.

“In fact, it was something floating,” said Short. “What if you did it as Jiminy Glick?” The reality is that Mike Myers did a game of games a few years ago in the character [as ‘Tommy Maitland’ on ‘The Gong Show’]. So I don’t know. It’s three hours of makeup. It seems to be a good idea on paper. »»

Short still likes to appear from time to time as Jiminy Glick – Last year, he welcomed “Jimmy Kimmel Live”. But he went from some of his other signature characters – including Ed Grimley.

“I think someone like Ed Grimley was interesting because he was an adult who still had the opening of a child, but at some point, it seems that he was an adult man suffering from a disease,” said Short. “So, you don’t look at him in the present in this way. But Glick can constantly be in the current, like a male barbara Walters, or someone who lasted decades.”
