EXCLUSIVE: William Mundell’s Neurosphere Entertainment has acquired cinema and television rights The lucky ones: a family and the extraordinary invention of Chinese AmericaThe non-fiction work of the historian Mae Ngai which tells a multigenerational story of pioneers in the struggle for American Chinese civil rights during the era of Chinese exclusion.
The neurosphere develops the book as a historical drama covering both feature films and limited standard formats. Mundell will produce alongside Joseph Culp, who will frame the scripts with Robyn Mundell.
Posted by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, (now by Mariner Books / HarperCollins, in Princeton Press pocket book) The lucky ones Focus on Joseph and Mary Tape, immigrants who challenged systemic racism in the 19th century San Francisco to demand equal rights for their children. When their daughter Mamie was denied entry into a local public school in 1884, the recordings brought their business – and won. The decision in Tape c. Hurley confirmed the citizenship of the birth law for the children of Chinese immigrants, decades before Plessy v. Ferguson or Brown c. Board of Education remedy American case law.
The point of view of the neurosphere on the material will focus on the legal battle of the band family for constitutional citizenship of the right of birth and on the way in which the fully assimilated family was essentially judged for its “American” in a deeply racist period of American history, in the spirit of the spirit of To kill a mocking bird. The project will trace the journey of the Family of Ribbons from the Post-Or San Francisco rush and the adoption of the Chinese exclusion law, through the world exhibition of St. Louis of 1904, the age of jazz and pro-Chinese gatherings during the Second World War, examining their heritage in the wider American tapestry.

Professor of American-Asian History and Studies at the University of Columbia, Ngai one of the eminent researchers of the country on immigration and citizenship. She is also the author of the premium Impossible subjects: illegal extraterrestrials and manufacture of modern America (2004), as well as the winner of the Bancroft Prize The Chinese question: gold ruptures and global policy (2021), and is co-editor of Corky Lee Asian America: fifty years of photographic justice (2024).
NGAI is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was a Guggenheim scholarship holder, a Radcliffe scholarship holder and a Kluge president at the Congress Library. She also received scholarships from the Institute for Advanced Study, the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers from the NY Public Library and the Russell Sage Foundation, among others. Ngai has written about the history and immigration policy for the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Atlantic and the Nation. Before becoming a historian, she was organizer and educator of unions in New York. She writes now Nation of immigrants: a short story of an ideaBased on Laurence Stone conferences in Princeton.
