5 Side Effects of Eating Too Many Pickles

What happens when you eat too many pickles
Popping pickle after pickle can set the stage for a few different symptoms. Here are five side effects that can occur.
1. You might have gas
Add pickles to the list of foods that can cause gas. Pickles are cucumbers that undergo a distinct pickling and fermentation process. Fermented foods are rich in probiotic bacteria, which are actually good for your gut. But, according to the Cleveland Clinic, eating too many probiotic foods like pickles can sometimes cause gas.
2. You might feel bloated
Bloating often comes from trapped gas that hasn’t yet been released from your gastrointestinal tract. So it’s no surprise that pickles can give you that bloated feeling. But that’s not the only thing happening. Although pickles are low in calories and high in fiber, they tend to be quite high in sodium, which can make bloating worse, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
“Sodium helps the body retain water, so consuming too much salt can lead to extra fluid buildup. The result is swelling, usually in the face, hands, feet, and ankles,” says Heather Mangieri, RDN, a Pittsburgh-based food, fitness, and nutrition consultant.
And you may not need to eat a lot to notice the effects. “Eat two pickles and you’ve consumed more than 50 percent of the maximum recommended daily sodium intake,” says Mangieri.
3. You can burp a lot
The same factors that cause flatulence in pickles can also cause gas to come out the other end. That said, if you eat an excessive amount of pickles, you may notice more burping.
4. You might be thirsty
Notice how your mouth feels like cotton after eating these pickles? This is to be expected. Foods high in sodium — from pickles to chips to pizza — tend to leave you feeling parched.
When high levels of sodium flood your blood, the body tries to compensate by increasing thirst. Indeed, drinking water can help restore balance to your electrolyte levels and reduce your thirst, according to a study published in the scientific journal. Hypertension.
5. You might notice heartburn
Heartburn often occurs after eating sharp, acidic, or vinegary foods, according to Harvard Health Publishing. Since some pickles are fermented in vinegar, eating too many can increase your risk of heartburn. It’s a good idea to be very careful with your intake, especially if you have underlying conditions like acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease.
