Five major food and drug recalls made headlines this month, for reasons ranging from undeclared allergens and bacterial contamination to unapproved ingredients and non-compliant drug requirements.
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries has recalled certain bottles of the ADHD prescription drug lisdexamfetamine dimesylate, a generic version of Vyvanse. The drug “did not meet dissolution specifications,” meaning it did not dissolve as expected in the laboratory, which could make it less effective.
The FDA has assigned the recall the second highest risk level, Class II, which indicates a low risk of serious health consequences but a potential for temporary or reversible effects.
“Although recall notifications can be frightening, it is important to contact your doctor immediately for advice before making any changes to your medication routine,” said Jennifer Young, PharmD, BCPS, CSP, senior medication safety specialist at the Institute for Safe Medication Practices. Health. “SCertain medications… should not be stopped abruptly.”
