Emma Stone says THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN co-star Andrew Garfield even lied to her about returning to NO WAY HOME

Emma Stone first played Gwen Stacy in 2012 The Amazing Spider-Man and reprized the role two years later in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Sony Pictures ended the franchise after this sequel, abandoning plans for two more films, Six disastersand even a Venom film set in the same world.

Spidey then joined the MCU, with Tom Holland taking over as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War.

Despite Gwen’s death in the second film, the plan was for her to be resurrected in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 (with Norman Osborn and his father, Captain George Stacy). Fortunately, this never happened.

Although that seemed to be the case for the short-lived franchise, Garfield reprized the role in the 2021 film. Spider-Man: No Way Homealongside Spiderman trilogy star Tobey Maguire. He spent months denying his involvement in the film, even amid leaked footage and wild — but accurate — claims from a food delivery driver.

While speaking to Josh Horowitz, Stone confirmed that she was one of the people kept in the dark by her former co-star. “I asked him if he was going to participate in this [movie] and he said to me: ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about'” she remembers. “I was like, ‘What?’ Oh, I guess that means no, but it wasn’t no, it was yes. Good for him. He kept it very close to the vest.”

Horowitz noted that there was a pivotal scene involving Peter’s relationship with Gwen, but that was new for the Oscar winner. “Actually, I haven’t seen it, no. It would be very emotional, I’m sure. I heard it was fantastic. I’ll see it eventually.”

It’s been four years, so I’m watching Spider-Man: No Way Home is clearly not a high priority for the Bugonia star. In fairness, she’s evolved a lot from Marvel, and given that Gwen is still dead in Peter #3’s reality, we wouldn’t count on her returning even for a cameo role in Avengers: Secret Wars.

As for Garfield, he recently denied that he would wear his costume again in the next Avengers movies, but we know better than to believe it at this point. Several reliable insiders have said he and Maguire will return, with the latter likely to show up in doomsday next December.

Either way, you have to give him credit for going to such lengths to keep a secret. Even with the leaks, it was a special experience to sit down and see all three Spider-Men together for the first time on the big screen.

“I really loved doing ‘Spider-Man'” Stone said earlier this year. “I loved everyone I worked with. I met Andrew [Garfield] there. I met Sally Field. Marc Webb was wonderful. It was a really special time in my life. It’s a recurring theme: it’s the people, more than the film itself, that have had an impact on me for so long. I only have good memories of this experience.”
