The LGBTQ representation in the film strikes a 3 -year hollow, the discoveries of Glaad

After reaching a record in 2022, the LGBTQ representation continues to decrease in the films.

On Wednesday, Glaad published the 13th edition of its Studio liability index (SRI), which found that LGBTQ inclusive films fell to 23.6% of the 10 main studio distributors in calendar 2024, compared to 27.3% in 2023 and 28.5% in 2022.

SRI also found that only two films (less than 1%) presented transgender characters; 37% of LGBTQ characters had less than a minute of screen time; Only 27% had more than 10 minutes of screen time, compared to 38% last year; LGBTQ color characters represented the lowest percentage since 2019 at 36%; And there was no LGBTQ character living with HIV in one of the 250 films Tracker.

“This year’s conclusions are an awakening to industry. At a time when LGBTQ people face unprecedented attacks in politics and the media, the film must be a space for visibility and truth,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, president and chief executive officer of Glaad. “The representation does not consist in checking a box – it is a question of knowing whose stories are told, whose life is valued, and create worlds which reflect our own society today. When they are made in an authentic way, the LGBTQ representation strengthens the public and the buzz, while the humanization of LGBTQ people as those in power work actively to remove our humanity.”

Meanwhile, gender parity has been reached among the LGBTQ characters for the first time in five years, in 50% of women, 48% of men and 2% non -binary; And A24 was the only studio to receive a “good” note with the highest percentage of LGBTQ films.

Looking at the outings of A24, Amazon, Apple TV +, Lionsgate, Nbcuniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, Sony Pictures Entertainment, The Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. Discovery, as well as their subsidiaries and their streaming services, the films were judged on the basis of the basic standard for the significant LGBTQ test, such as the organization.

The 2024 titles that have passed the Vito Russo test include Liminant love (A24), Problem (A24), My old ass (Amazon), Car dolls (Nbcuniversal), Wicked girls (Paramount images), Fancy dance (Apple TV +), Good sorrow (Netflix), Ground floor (Netflix), Lover (Warner Bros. Discovery), Household interview for beginners (Nbcuniversal), Radleys (Lionsgate), Ricky Stanicky (Amazon), Between the temples (Sony Pictures Entertainment) and Ball dates (The Walt Disney Company).

After the Trump administration’s attacks on Dei and the recent attempt to cancel the month of pride, several LGBTQ films are finding their way on screen this year.
