While Lord of the Rings fans await the next installment in the franchise – directed by Andy Serkis The Hunt for Gollum in December 2027 — they returned to the cinema this weekend to attend Peter Jackson’s 25th birthday The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) as well as its two sequels, The two towers from 2002 and The return of the king from 2003.
Combined, the complete New Line trilogy re-release through Fathom Events grossed $9 million at the domestic box office during this frame, with an additional $1.5 million coming from overseas markets for a combined worldwide weekend of $10.5 million.
Burst, Fellowship of the Rings made $3.85 million over four days, while Two rounds made $2.64 million (showings started Saturday) and The return of the king has earned $2.5 million since Sunday.
Originally booked for two weekends – January 16-18 and January 23-25 – each title was to be performed on a particular day, for example, The Fellowship of the Ring Friday, The two towers Saturday, and THE The return of the king on Sunday. But at the request of fans, theater chains have added additional days, locations and marathons.
In honor of the 25th anniversary of the theatrical release, Jackson recorded previously unreleased intros for each title in the trilogy. AMC, Regal and select circuits sold limited popcorn-branded buckets of popcorn to celebrate live-action takes on JRR Tolkien’s novels.
Warner Bros’ Fathom and New Line have already teamed up in 2024 for a theatrical re-release of the trilogy and grossed $8.2 million at the domestic box office over three weekends.
The multi-Oscar winning team behind the blockbuster THE Lord of the Rings And The Hobbit The trilogies – Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens – come together to produce two new Tolkien’s Middle-earth films for Warner Bros and New Line Cinema. Zane Weiner also produces.
Sperm for life for the whole Lord of the Rings And Hobbit The live-action films across six titles account for north of $5.9 billion at the worldwide box office.
Walsh and Boyens wrote the screenplay for In search of Gollumwith Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Ian McKellen has announced that he will return as Gandalf, Serkis (natch) as Gollum and Elijah Wood as Frodo.
Presentation for In search of Gollum: The picture explores Aragorn’s adventures as a ranger, particularly his quest to capture Gollum between The Hobbit And Fellowship of the Ringtracking him to guard the location of Sauron’s Ring.
Cameras should be rolling in May. The Hunt for Gollum opens December 17, 2027.
