Costumier Paul Tazewell wins a Tony Award for “Death Becow Her”

Costumier Paul Tazewell won a Tony Award for his work on the Broadway musical “Death Befet Her”.

Tazewell, who worked on the cinematic version of “Wicked, has made the history of Oscars earlier this year as the first black man to win the best costume design.

During his acceptance speech, Tazewell said: “Black, Queer, little boy, in Akron, Ohio, did not know that in 2025, he would have the year he had.”

He joined Bob Fosse, who also achieved the feat of winning a Tony Award and an Oscar the same year. This is Tazewell’s second Tony Award. He previously won for “Hamilton”.

In his speech by Tony on Sunday, Tazewell added: “I dressed a lot of you, and I worked with the rest of you to create incredible worlds and tell wonderful stories, and it is a huge privilege of being a significant part of this Broadway community.”

Speaking of his work adapting some of the most emblematic costumes of the 1992 film of “Death Deve’s Her”, said Tazewell Variety Last month, “I knew it was going to be a huge challenge, because if the rest of the public loved it as I did, there would be a lot of expectations.”

He added that the staging of the film on stage had advantages.

“Musical theater and live performance open up a different way of telling the story,” he said. “So, in a way, it allows me to broaden my inspiration on how we want to tell the story.
