Longtime friend Carole Bayer Sager said People that when she saw Keaton recently, she was shocked by his appearance. “I saw her two or three weeks ago and she was very skinny,” the award-winning singer-songwriter said. “She had lost so much weight.”
Sager added that she hasn’t seen Keaton often over the past year after the actress left Los Angeles following the wildfires earlier this year.
“She had to go to Palm Springs because her house was damaged inside and they had to clean it all up,” Sager said. “She was there for a while and when she came back I was a little stunned by the amount of weight she had lost.”
Another friend said People that the Annie Hall star’s health has rapidly deteriorated in recent months, leaving some of her closest friends in the dark about what’s going on. “She refused very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her,” the friend said. “It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit.”
The source added: “During her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”
What was the cause of Diane Keaton’s death?
No official cause of death was released following Keaton’s death. A recording of a 911 call obtained by TMZ reveals that the Los Angles Fire Department was called to Keaton’s Los Angeles home around 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, in response to reports of a “person down.”
Before his death, Keaton battled bulimia and skin cancer.
Keaton opened up about her eating disorder to Dr. Oz in 2014. “All I did was feed my hunger, so I’m an addict,” she said. “It’s true. I’m a recovering addict, I will always be an addict. I have an addictive nature in me.” She revealed that during her struggle with bulimia, she would eat up to 20,000 calories and then force herself to vomit.
In his 20s, Keaton beat basal cell carcinoma. Then, decades later, he was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer that required two surgeries to remove it.
“It’s a family affair,” she told Los Angeles Times in 2015. “I remember my aunt Martha had skin cancer so bad that she had her nose removed. My dad had basal skin cancer and my brother had it. It’s tricky with skin cancer. That’s why you have to wear sunscreen.”
Keaton is survived by her two children, daughter Dexter, 29, and son Duke, 25, whom she took in through adoption when she was in her 50s.
