A favorite star trek character will have more screen in Strange New Worlds season 3

The needs of the many prevail over the needs of a few … until they do not do it. “Star Trek” has always fought with this moral dilemma, going back to the first appearance of Leonard Nimoy as Spock in “The Original Series”. However, even Gene Roddenberry himself could not have predicted to what extent this debate would become premonitory as the franchise grew and continuously widen over the long decades. Practically all the series have been composed of a set of characters, which are all rich and superimposed to demand episodes and whole arcs revolving around them. Of course, it was a much easier proposal in a previous era of unionized television, when the networks regularly ordered seasons amounting to more than 20 episodes each. Nowadays, at a time when streaming mandates and the rise in budgets lead to much less track to tell the same stories related to space, well, viewers are deprived of the ability to really know each individual parked on each starship bridge.

“Strange New Worlds” could however be the exception. The long -awaited first of season 3 has finally refined on the horizon and, at its appearance, fans can safely anticipate an emphasis on the Starfleet officers who were otherwise kept on the margins. This includes an Erica Ortegas, represented by Melissa Navia. / Film recently had the chance to sit on an interview with the round table with the cast of “Strange New Worlds”, where we interviewed the actor about the notion of pushing the creative team of the program for a larger share of the spotlights – in particular with regard to the regular and cooled barage of the USS Enterprise. As Navia said:

“Yeah. I mean, I know for my part I did not do it [push for more screen time] In particular, because I knew since season 1, our showrunners and our writers have said: “We want to write more toes in the series”. But when you have 10 episodes and you have this incredible overall distribution, and you have inherited characters and new characters, the fact that we draw as many of them that we have obtained is a testimony of writers and what they are able to make these mini-films that you get. “”

The positive response of fans helped convince the strange writers of the new world to give to Ortegas more equipment in season 3

The practical concerns of the real world always end up taking into account the decisions taken on large budget productions, to a extent that fans are not aware. With “Strange New Worlds”, Co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers appointed this subject even as a “regret” he had during season 1, even by distinguishing the character of Erica Ortegas by name as a character he wanted to make room to go ahead. Fortunately, she then received more accent in the second year season and, judging by what we saw of season 3, there should be even more to come. Actor Melissa Navia then identified a specific factor that ended up providing even more motivation for the actors and the show team: fans. Trekkies are used to gravity to each character in a given series or film, whatever their major or minor, and Ortegas found himself at the top of the wishes of a fan. As Navia explained:

“But for Ortegas, after season 1, seeing the great response of the fans, it was so beautiful and comforting and all that you could ask as an actor. And again, our showrunners are like:” We know what fans want, we will give them. “And then season 2, I was very excited by all the screen time she obtained, but the fans were not excited [laughs]. They were excited, but they said to themselves: “Not enough!” And I say to myself: ‘Ah!’

“So, season 3 is a progression. And I would like to see – I like our writers, I think they are all rock stars. I would like to see where they see Ortegas go, and then I will also have my comment. But many things do what they do best, and I do what I do on my side.”

Even if “Strange New Worlds” is starting to map his last seasons, there is still a lot of room to give Ortegas, Doctor M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) and even new arrivals like Roger de Cillian O’Sullivan, the time of the screen.

The first of season 3 of “Strange New Worlds” is now in difficulty on Paramount +.
